Our moon is moving away from Earth at about an inch per year. When the Earth was very young, the moon orbited 15 times closer to the Earth. It appeared 15 times larger in the sky than it does today!
Current theory suggests the moon was created from a massive collision between Earth and another huge astrophysical body. The “Giant Impact” theory attributes the same type of collision to causing shooting stars and extinction of the dinosaurs.
